I can feel the pressure
ITS GETTING CLOSER NOW
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It was fifth year, all over again, Filipa being cooped up in the library like this. Before the O.W.L.'s gave Filipa pride, a sense of accomplishment. She worked hard and kicked ass so that she could get into the courses she needed in order to become head of some ministry department someday. Now, they gave her a sense of what she still needed to learn. She wanted top marks in all of them, and when she pushed that hard and received less than favorable in Herbology, Filipa was less than pleased. A little less, actually. She felt stupid, jealous, and angry that she couldn't be just as good as the others who did well on that section. So what if she received top marks in about five other courses? She wasn't the best with that black mark sitting on her record like that. And so, while Filipa was working to do the best in her class on her next Astronomy exam, she was also studying Herbology (although she was no longer enrolled in the course). With this kind of outlook, she might have been in Ravenclaw. Sitting at a table, surrounded by books, her eyes focused on the page and nothing else. There was a fidget here, a flip of the page there, but besides that she was a statue. But it wasn't that she was intelligent or that she wanted to be intelligent. Fili was looking for redemption for her the pride that she lost when she received that mark on her Herbology O.W.L. by teaching herself the information she missed on the exam. She wouldn't get bragging rights for this one, no grade to show her parents, but she would have the self-satisfaction of knowing Herbology (something she never even knew she wanted until she crashed and burned on the O.W.L.).
However, Filipa remembered all too quickly why she must have done so poorly. The entire class was based off of plants. Damn plants. Astronomy claimed stars, History claimed people, Charms and Transfiguration claimed wandwork, and Potions claimed potions. Herbology claimed weeds, roots, proper feeding, and proper trimming. Seriously? It was worse than Care Of Magical Creatures, which was pretty low on Filipa's scale of interest. If she wasn't so obsessively driven she would have been like any other student and just given up. She didn't need the course, it wasn't in her new schedule, and so hse was only punishing herself. But that's what needed to be done. She had sucked and she needed to learn and if that was a form of punishment than so be it. Fili was going to spend all day in that library if she had to until she memorized at least three chapters of the latest Herbology textbook and went over her Astronomy notes about tenmillion times. Her friends understood the look in her eyes when she saw them at breakfast and they knew what it meant when she made a beeline toward the library after they had an extended meal together. She was careful not to let any of them know she was studying Herbology again though. She openly admitted her downfall on the O.W.L. but she played it off, making her friends believe she was alright with it, which they so eagerly accepted. And then there was Aaron. As a note flew into her line of focus, she was reminded of the one person that could see past her convincing smile and saw how hard she was working herself. Filipa lazily opened the note, reading that he was going to be joining her soon, reminding her of their study session that she had previously set up.
But hey, at least he knew the value in a warning. This gave her enough time to shuffle some books around, pulling the Astronomy textbook front and center. She tucked away the Herbology textbook, the notes along with it, and trained her eyes on new information. She usually liked a little waiting period, a time for the information to sink in, but she knew there wasn't going to be chance this time. There was no way she wanted Aaron to know she was obsessing over more unnecessary work. In the time that she had to shuffle her things around, she took in the sights of the library. It wasn't very busy as some classes were still going on. There was a good assortment of houses, a few students that she knew and smiled at, but all in all no one that rang any bells. It seemed like every time she was in a crowded place, which was often in Hogwarts, she needed to check for a sign of one of her half-siblings. Her half-sister, not so much. She was nicer and more accepting and thus there wasn't this awkward tension between them. But when it came to her half-brother, she needed to know if he was around. She needed to know what quick exits were open, what walkways were clear, and what field of vision she could look toward without making eye contact with those hateful and stubborn eyes of his. A smile rested on her lips as she found that they were nowhere in sight and then she looked back to her book, knowing that Aaron would be arriving any second.
