Her favorite part of the school was that you could always find a quiet place to yourself. Most of the time she found it in the corner of the slytherin common room where she was mostly left alone, which was nice. But nice it was a nice saturday afternoon she had ventured out of the castle to the black lake. Even though it was May there were still some dark grey clouds in the sky, so she assumed it may rain later which would be nice. The Slytherin common room was nicer when it rained out. Even thought it was a Saturday she was still sporting her house colors in a nice green tank top and a black sweater over it. Then jeans and boots of course since she was down by the lake and sometimes it got muddy. Her hair was down but tucked behind her ears. With her was her favorite book of the semester, which happened to be a potions book. She believed that she was a slytherin basically because she loved potions since other than that she did not fit in with the ground. After walking around for a bit she found a quiet spot under a tree and sat down on one of the large roots that was sticking out of the ground. From her seat she had a great view of the lake and the castle in the back ground. She glanced at the plants around her then she pulled out her book and flipped through the pages to see what she could do with the plants around her.

If there was one thing that Katerina Lestrange was known for, besides her last name, it was that she played favorites with her students. True, she didn’t see most of them beyond their first year, but she was well known to favor the students from her own house, Slytherin. It wasn’t a fact that she really advertised, it just had a habit of getting out each year. Of course, Katerina didn’t really bother with trying to get the students to believe otherwise. She was fair enough when officiating quidditch matches so students had a hard time getting the charge to stick to her and like most things that she did, she was subtle in the practice. Katerina wasn’t foolish enough to be so obvious that her job would be at risk.
Though she would have preferred to be teaching transfiguration, Katerina did enjoy her job and the opportunities that it afforded her. Few knew that her aunt Bellatrix was raising an army and what a better place to look for soldiers than Hogwarts. Everyday Katerina was looking for students likely to join their cause or targets to be taken out if the need arose. She knew that she was being watched, but she was careful to keep her activities quiet. Besides, she also wanted to keep an eye on her cousin. She would never understand why Isabella had not demanded to be resorted and frankly, it made her a bit suspicious. Even the girl’s reasoning for staying made it seem as though she would have been better suited to the House of the Snakes. Still, Katerina had long ago made peace with the fact that she would simply have to keep a close eye out. Besides, there were other students to watch as well.
Naturally, Katerina looked to the members of her own house first for recruits. She watched one of her students heading to the lake, Cassandra Murphy and decided to follow along, intent on a one on one conversation to see what the girl was like. Katerina was an expert by now at having seemingly friendly conversations and determining interest without setting off alarms. The smallest expression could give her a clue into the mind within and even the tiniest hints of anti-death eater sentiment would have kept Katerina from revealing her true intentions. She would not even bring up death eaters or the last war; the meeting was more about getting to know Cassandra before Katerina would even have considered bringing anything up that could lead to such a discussion.
Her heels sank slightly into the grass as she walked down to Cassandra and smiled warmly at the girl. Do you mind if I join you? she asked. Katerina’s tone radiated friendly warmth just as she intended it to. You’re Cassandra, correct? And I’m hoping your clothing tells me that I’m correct in believing that you’re in my old house, Slytherin? she asked, tucking her legs underneath her as she sat on the grass, being careful to avoid showing anyone more than she intended with the skirt. I know I’m no longer your professor, but if you’re trying to find a potion that you can make with any of this stuff, you’d do better to have a book on herbology than on potion making. There’s on in the library that has an index of all plants and the potions that they’re used for. Should be faster than looking through each potion trying in vain to find a plant name. she said, trying to come across as helpful.

She gave up with the plants and was just starting out into the black lake with the book open on her lap. Her father used to tell her stories about the black lake from when he was a teenager at Hogwarts. Of course he was telling her rumors that he heard and pretending that they were stories or legends. But she did wonder what sort of things could be in the lake and if the rumors he told her were true. Her dad was a great man and a very powerful wizard. In her mind she never completely understood why her mom left such a great wizard. But her mother was a muggle, making Cassandra a half blood which made her very secretive about her past. Being in Slythernin she knew that everyone was pureblood, except for her, and everyone believed in a pure race. Again Cassandra did not fit into thier ideals.
As she was sitting on the tree root she heard someone approaching her and she quickly turned from her spacing to who this women was. yes she realized that she was a teacher at the school. Actually she remembered seeing this women at the quidditch matches she went to. However she felt bad since she was unable to recall that women's name. "no please sit... and yes I am Cassandra." She replied and then offered the women a seat near her. "yes I am in Slytherin... I am sorry but I am completely forgetting your name right now."
She listened to the women talk about plants and nodded. "yeah I was just looking. I figured I wouldn't get much out of it but it was something to do this afternoon... better than being stuck inside of the castle all day." She explained and closed the text book. She looked down at the book and then back at the women.

Katerina was mildly annoyed that the girl seemed unaware of who she was. If she could remember the names of her students, of which she had many, she expected her students to remember her name as a professor. After all, there were many students but few teachers at the school. Her reaction didn’t show, but she was already ruling the girl out as a candidate. That’s alright. I haven’t taught you since you were a first year. I’m Professor Lestrange, but you may call me Katerina for now as I am not one of your teachers. Though, in front of other students I would prefer being addressed as Professor; we can’t have the other students believing that I’m too nice. she added with a wink.
She tossed her dark hair over her shoulder and took a moment to enjoy the way the sun warmed her skin. Her eyes were shut as she listened to the girl’s reply, a small smile lingering on her lips though she was already writing the girl off. Katerina could have cut her losses then but she didn’t want to be rude to the girl. It would have been strange to sit down only to spring back up again. Besides, Cassandra had a point: the weather that day was simply marvelous. Most would have been too hot in the black sweater that she had worn, but Katerina had a penchant for wearing dark colors.
Yes, I suppose I can’t really blame you for wishing to be outside. The Slytherin common room doesn’t really welcome sunlight. Though the sunlight filtering through the lake always did make things look pretty inside. she told the student, her eyes still closed against the sun’s rays. The seven years that she had spent in that house were the some of the best times of her life. She missed those days. Her life was so different now then what she had thought it was going to be. It didn’t make her unhappy necessarily but she often wondered how much happier she would have been if she had gotten her way. I’m surprised there aren’t more of your peers outside. Katerina continued before turning to face Cassandra. If you want something to pass the time, you might try flying or swimming if you’re really brave. The lake only has a few monsters and most don’t dwell very close to the shore.

Cassandra made not of a mild toneof annoyance when she told the women that she did not know who she was. This made her feel bad so she quickly adverted her eyes so once again she was looking at the ground. When her siblings would take this tone with her it was her onl responce. She was frequently made fun of for her magical abilities. In her fathers most recent owl he told her that her siblings missed her and she was sure it was just his idea of making her feel better. "yes sorry Professor Lestrange." She said and tucked some hair back behind her ear so the wind would stop blowing it in her face.
After listeneing to her professor she nodded."I have a feeling they dont like the sun all that much." She commented. "i've noticed that they enjoy thier dark common room... and I enjoy it to." She explained. Honestly the common room was one of her favorite rooms in the castle but it was just nicer to be outside in the sun. Maybe make her look a bit less pale.
"i'm not feeling brave enough to take on the monsters in the lake." She said and took a quick glance at her out of the corner of her eye. But then she quickly looked back to the lake. "i do image it is lovely under the surface..." She added. Cassandra had heard that people were being recruited but she was not concerned that this women was trying. Of course she figured that the professor knew her past and who would want her in a slytherin army.

] Yes, this girl was not one for the army. It didn’t escape Katerina they way that Cassandra deemed it ‘their’ common room, instead of ‘the’ common room. The girl before her must have considered herself to be separate from the other Slytherins. The perception of most Slytherins was that they were all blood purists and the house of dark wizards and witches. Katerina herself was evidence of the truth in the stereotype and unlike most, she didn’t really have a problem with the stereotype. Of course, in recent years the division was less obvious but some considered there to be a slight taint to the house; they believed there would forever be a taint. She wondered what this girl made of being in a house with that stigma attached. If she had to guess, Katerina imagined Cassandra was quite unhappy and she made a mental note to check the student’s records later.
Katerina would never have thought it shameful to be in the house of the snake but she knew that there were a few did not share her sentiments; she would gladly have given those students up to be in Hufflepuff. Honestly, she was surprised students sorted into Hufflepuff didn’t simply go home and cry in disgrace. There were only two Hufflepuffs of note that Katerina could recall: the first being the founder, the second being the Diggory boy that had died in the Triwizard Tournament. It didn’t matter to Katerina that most of the wizards from her house for famous for being considered evil. People considered her Aunt Bellatrix to be evil; Kat knew her aunt was capable of murder and torture, but Katerina believed the circumstances excused her aunt’s behavior and made it acceptable. The Lestrange’s were fighting a war and naturally each side considered the opposite to be ‘evil’.
The lake is lovely. Though, I wouldn’t recommend going in without a wand to defend yourself. I trust James—Professor Apollo, has taught you all about merpeople and grindylows? she asked. James was an auror which should have made him a great teacher in his subject, but Katerina had the feeling he was doing more at Hogwarts than teaching. Sometimes she felt as though he was watching her a bit too closely. You could always try to buy some Gillyweed and explore. I’m sure you at the very least have learned the basics of defending yourself. she continued. From what she heard, James did a good job of preparing his students and knew his area well. Still, Katerina was confident that her knowledge of the Dark Arts would be more than a match for him should it ever come to that. At the moment, she was simply trying to learn how much he had uncovered.
Perhaps she ought to have involved him in her plans to start a dueling club. At the moment, it was just an idea in her head but it would achieve a number of things. For starters, she would have seen which students, if any had enough talent to be of use to her aunt and which could be useful given training. If he hasn’t, I was thinking of starting a dueling club which would help the students. Do you think it would be something the students would be interested in. I rarely interact with students of other houses unless they play quidditch. she asked.

The case was that she was not ashamed of the house she was put in but just scared of how people functioned in that house. SO many nights as a first year she heard of the older kids talking about how they hate muggle borns but half bloods were even worse. Also that they wanted to wipe out all of the half bloods. Who wouldnt be scared if they were in that sitation? Cassandra definately was but she did love her house. She wore the colors often and exceled in potions like all other slytherins. The few friends she did have were awesome and she was loyal to them. But she was still scared of her past.
"yes Professor Apollo has taught us about them." She said. She found his class interesting and she found all of her classes interesting. After Hogwarts she planned to continue her education wherever she could. Maybe that ment going to a muggle college or finding a magical college. Then maybe come back and be a professor because she didnt really want to work in her father shop for the rest of her life. But the future seemed so far away and who knows teenagers change their mind so often. Maybe tomorrow she'd fall in love and want to be a wife and mother. Who knows... she definately didnt but maybe she could do a reading later to see what the furture held for her.
"A dueling club would be fun... I heard they used to have one of those here but got rid of it a long time ago." She said. "after all we do need experience in all areas of magic and dueling seems like it would have real world applications." She added. Real world experience would benefit her since she was really jsut book smart and knew that she needed to learn to properly defend herself should the need arise.
