ROLEPLAYING EXAMPLE:
ruby sat at her new desk, in her new bedroom, in her new home. she could hear her new mother's and new father's voices downstairs listening to hew new television. nothing was the same, she thought as she stared down at her homework for potions that she had to do over the summer. her name was a constant reminder that none of this was real- it was like playing house. she got to play the daughter this time. tapping her pencil on the wooden surface of the desk, ruby's blue eyes shifted to gaze at the ceiling. glow in the dark stars dotted the white paint, adding character to the room. she put them there so she could marvel at them in the night. it's not like she slept much anyway.
bored and rather frustrated with these problems she was supposed to solve, ruby pushed her chair back and stood up, raising her arms above her head in a stretch. after a moment, she let them fall at her sides and began making her way downstairs, where her 'father' was bellowing with laughter- it seems they were enjoying the muggle idea of a television. reaching back to rub her neck, ruby kept her eyes on the ground as she stepped into the kitchen, which opened into the living room with a wide arch. she watched her feet, one in front of the other. left right left. her 'mother' exclaimed something and turned to her, asking her a question.
ruby waved her off. she was used to being alone, living alone. she had three months of it- she could take care of herself. why were these people even bothering? sure, it was nice, but she was seventeen and quite capable. grabbing a glass and filling it with water, she she turned on her heels and went back upstairs, glad to be out of the spotlight. she stopped at her doorway, and noticed that the light was off, the sun setting leaving darkness in the room that wasn't there before. she contemplated turning on the lights, but decided against it. she'd give those glowing stars a time to shine. god knows they needed it.
